The Loose Fill Asbestos Coordination team was established on 1 July 2022 to deliver the remaining work of the Asbestos Response Taskforce – in supporting community safety, the removal of properties affected by loose fill asbestos insulation (Mr Fluffy) from the Canberra residential community and to manage an ongoing Loose Fill Asbestos Insulation Eradication Scheme for any further affected properties identified in the future.

The Loose Fill Asbestos Insulation Eradication Scheme has involved the acquisition and demolition of almost 1,000 properties across the ACT.

The vast majority of known affected houses have now been demolished. Remediated blocks then become available for purchase by former homeowners and the general public, with new homes appearing on former Mr Fluffy blocks, helping to reinvigorate affected neighbourhoods.

History

After extensive discussions with experts, asbestos assessors and homeowners, in 2014 the ACT Government determined that demolition of houses affected by loose fill asbestos insulation was the only enduring solution.
