The Loose Fill Asbestos Coordination team was established on 1 July 2022 to deliver the remaining work of the Asbestos Response Taskforce – in supporting community safety, the removal of properties affected by loose fill asbestos insulation (Mr Fluffy) from the Canberra residential community and to manage an ongoing Loose Fill Asbestos Insulation Eradication Scheme for any further affected properties identified in the future.
The Loose Fill Asbestos Insulation Eradication Scheme has involved the acquisition and demolition of almost 1,000 properties across the ACT.
The vast majority of known affected houses have now been demolished. Remediated blocks then become available for purchase by former homeowners and the general public, with new homes appearing on former Mr Fluffy blocks, helping to reinvigorate affected neighbourhoods.
The Coordination team continues to support current and former homeowners and residents by:
- purchasing and demolishing properties affected or impacted by loose fill asbestos insulation as part of a voluntary buyback program
- selling remediated blocks to support renewal in Canberra’s suburbs
- providing advice and assistance regarding the private demolition and sale of affected blocks
- assisting current homeowners and residents to maintain their properties for the safety and wellbeing of the community
- providing individual case management, personal advice, assistance and support

History
After extensive discussions with experts, asbestos assessors and homeowners, in 2014 the ACT Government determined that demolition of houses affected by loose fill asbestos insulation was the only enduring solution.
