After an affected property is purchased by the ACT Government under the buyback program, the house is demolished, the block is remediated and then deregistered.
The sale of remediated blocks allows the ACT Government to recover some of the costs of purchasing, maintaining, demolishing and remediating blocks, and safely disposing of affected homes.
Rebuilding houses on these blocks gives each community, neighbourhood, street and homeowner a new beginning, free from loose fill asbestos insulation.
Remediated blocks will be offered for sale, in the following order:
- to the former owner who reserved their First Right of Refusal
- to ACT Government agencies
- to the general public through a competitive process
The sale price for a remediated block is determined by the Suburban Land Agency (SLA) based on independent market valuations through independent property valuers.
Rebuilding on a remediated block
Any rebuilding activity, whether by a former owner, ACT Government agency, or a new purchaser, is subject to the usual development approval and/or building approvals in accordance with the Territory Plan.
In some cases, the land may be subject to special planning considerations.
Private sales
Homeowners of affected properties can privately sell their block on the open market. However, there are some things you must know when selling your block privately, depending on whether you are selling it with the affected property still standing or whether it has been privately demolished.
