New asbestos safety notice

29 June 2023

From 1 July 2023, when a house is sold, renovated or leased, the new owners or lessees will be given an updated asbestos advice notice (678.6 KB) letting them know that asbestos may be present in houses built before 1990.

The notice advises the signs to look out for and where to get more information or seek professional advice. It includes all forms of asbestos, including loose fill asbestos insulation.

The purpose of the notice is to improve the overall safety approach to home maintenance and renovation work to help mitigate the risk posed by asbestos.

The existing notice provides advice for houses built in or before 1985. The new notice updates the advice and now incorporates houses built in or before 1990. The changes are based on national advice from the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency (ASEA).

The notice will be provided during residential building approvals, residential tenancy agreements and contracts for sale for residential premises.

Safety Note

Asbestos is an ongoing hazard to our population and the ACT Government is continually looking for ways to advise the community about its danger and to remove it physically or otherwise prevent it escaping into the environment. While bonded asbestos is not as likely to cause illness as loose fill asbestos does, there is still a significant risk involved.
